The intersection of faith and films can be rare in today's secular society. But the BET movie premiere of
Being Mary Jane
, created by Mara Brock Akil, featuring Gabrielle Union, which will debut as the network’s
first original drama series in January, put a Bible-based quote  on display within the first several minutes of
airing.

After fornicating with a man she didn’t know was married and finding out on a whim after the deed,
distraught, Mary Jane Paul posted encouraging sticky notes to lift her spirits.

When the camera zoomed in on one message specifically, there was a quote about God’s compassion,
worth repeating.

Attributed to Kathie Lee Gifford the saying read, “But the Bible says, even though we may blow it every day,
God’s mercy is fresh for us every morning.”

Based on a Scripture in Lamentations 3:22-24, in the Message Bible translation, it says this:

“GOD’s loyal love couldn’t have run out, his merciful love couldn’t have dried up. They’re created new
every morning. How great your faithfulness! I’m sticking with GOD (I say it over and over). He’s all I’ve
    got left.”

Wherever they pop up, messages and affirmations of faith are often just enough to drive someone to seek
God in a distressing time. Who knows what viewer may have been in a similar situation as Union's
character? Perhaps, the reminder that God loves them despite their mess-ups and errors is just what they
needed to get through.

The series, likely to be a big hit with minority female audiences, is not a faith-based program, however, and
may not focus on too many God-centered themes. Seeing one in the debut, though, was refreshing and
welcome.
