When Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, two Christian media moguls, teamed up to roll out new programming
for the OWN Network, some thought it was a fairly odd pairing. But the move has turned out to be a smart
one, since, after hooking up with the creative genius behind Madea, Winfrey’s once struggling network has
seen its highest ratings to date.
According to the official ratings report released earlier this week, in June, the Oprah Winfrey Network scored
its best quarter in network history, charting 32% growth in the second quarter of 2013, making OWN a Top
5 cable network for African-American women 25-54.
Perry’s newly introduced scripted dramas, “The Haves and Have Nots” and “Love Thy Neighbor,” have been
ratings gold for OWN, proving that the 34th Street Films CEO understands how to craft a message that
resonates with women of color.
Despite the uptick in the number of viewers, however, OWN has drawn criticism for selecting dramatic
programming with soap-like qualities, over “live your best life” TV.
The Los Angeles Times notes, “The larger issue is one of image -- from the beginning, OWN claimed to
value quality over quantity, its programming developed to fit in Oprah's world view and, more importantly
perhaps, her taste.”
Change, however, was necessary, since Winfrey’s taste in entertainment did not seem to have mass appeal.
Perhaps, Perry has added the spice the network was lacking.
It’s hard to argue with it, since numbers don’t lie.
